A Letter from Marj Gavigan, Chair of the Regina Public Library Board of Directors
On Wednesday night we were told by the City there is not enough money to support a new Central Library.
This is contrary to what we were told in July 2024 when Council approved our funding.
Since then, we have spent $2M of taxpayer money on this project. We have kept the City informed of what we’re planning and what we’re doing.
City Administration has suggested we save the money through our mill rate. That would mean no new library for 14 years.
In the meantime, the current central building is not accessible to all people. Its 1960s design doesn’t allow us to provide modern library services. It will cost a lot of money to fix it up and keep the doors open.
Central Library is the hub of our library system, and the work done there supports our branches.
The library board will continue to lobby for a new Central. We want to give you awesome library services. We want you to be excited about visiting Central Library. We want our downtown to feel safe.
Please contact your city councillor and ask them to find a way to fund Central Library. Help us put an end to 17 years of dilly-dallying while the current building declines.
